When you are considering which hearing aids would be right for you, the decision can seem daunting at first. Fortunately, your doctor can help you with the decision by narrowing down the hearing aids that would work best with your particular hearing problem, your budget, and your preferences.
Your least expensive options are almost always the standard hearing aids, which have been used for many years. When you use standard aids, you control the volume yourself, turning it up and down when necessary. Though these types of hearing aids are the cheapest, they are also usually the least effective in certain circumstances, such as in very noisy situations. If you only have a slight hearing problem, however, these types of aids may be sufficient.
Technological advances have produced two new types of hearing aids that, although they are more expensive, are often a much better choice for those with significant hearing loss. Analog aids are programmed by a computer to your unique specifications and include a remote volume control. Digital hearing aids are also programmed, and can adjust volume controls and reduce background noises on their own, without manual or remote control.
You will also need to make decisions about the size of your hearing device, whether you want it to rest inside the ear or behind the ear, and what you can get for what you can afford. Your doctor, preferably an ear specialist, along with a reputable hearing aid specialist, can help you make all these important decisions.
