Many people worry about getting a hearing aid because they don’t want people to think any negative thoughts about them. But, if you are having a hard time hearing you will soon notice that you withdraw from conversations and don’t interact with others as much as you used to. While having a hard time hearing is a good indication that you may need a hearing aid, you should visit your doctor to be sure. There are some conditions in the ear which are not permanent that can cause hearing loss if they are not treated. If it turns out that you do need a hearing aid, you will soon realize that they can be very small and unnoticeable by other people.
When you visit your doctor he or she may not be able to tell you for certain if you need a hearing aid. Most doctors will send you to a specialist, usually an audiologist, and they will give you some very sophisticated hearing tests to determine what the problem is. The tests usually take minutes and the audiologist will be able to tell what the problem in the ear is and what type of hearing aid you need. Most of the hearing aids today can be purchased and adjusted in the office within a day or two for your convenience. Remember only an audiologist can determine if you need a hearing aid so don’t be afraid to ask questions so that you feel comfortable moving forward and getting a hearing aid if you need it.
